How Qigong Works

Qigong is the art of deliberately managing your bodies vital energy or Qi. It is vital energy that keeps the millions of systems in your body working correctly.

When this vital energy is not able to flow harmoniously through the energy streams of your body (called meridians) as a result of blockages – illness develops. The severity of the illness is linked to the severity of the blockage/s. If a blockage is severe enough to stop the flow of vital energy completely. Death quickly follows.

The practice of Qigong first removes these blockages. Once a Qigong practitioner has harmonious energy flow they will have good health. Then Qigong practice increases the strength of the flow of energy which results in the practitioner being healthy and full of vitality. The next step in Qigong is to develop an abundance of energy flow. When this happens a Qigong practitioner is healthy, full of vitality and improves longevity.

In short the practice of Qigong can lead to a happier, healthier and longer life. How long this process takes is dependent on correct, daily practice. Qigong is not some 30 day miracle cure. It is an Art of a skill that is developed through discipline and commitment.

If you’ve never heard of Qigong before think of it as the Chinese version of Yoga. Qigong is generally a composite of gentle external movements, co-ordinated with the breathing, practiced in a meditative state of mind. I say generally because with a history of 5000+ years there are many different varieties of Qigong.

Qigong requires virtually zero athleticism and is quicker to learn than Tai Chi and less strenuous than Yoga. It requires no expensive equipment and can be practiced nearly every where. It is the worlds best kept stay young, health and energy secret.

Qigong is the art of Harnessing QI, which directly affects the blood flow and is an exercise that makes your blood pulse.  This pulsing occurs by moving Qi using specific breathing techniques along with postures and slow graceful movements.  Qigong also encompasses using healing foods, herbs, acupressure, yogic stretches, all of which energize the body, increase vitality & accelerate metabolism.   

Qigong is circulation; term “blood flow” is synonymous to “moving Qi”.  Many studies confirm practicing Qigong reduces drug withdraw in Heroin addicts by 50 percent. Several Qigong instructors we’ve certified are teaching with huge success at Florida drug rehab clinics.  Studies also reveal that Qigong boosts the immune system and is beneficial for those fighting cancer. Dr. Oz was quoted by saying that if you want to live to be 100 to do Qigong.  These techniques originated over 3000 years ago by mountain wonderers, people who were activated by Qi.  Most Acupuncturists are strong believers in Qigong and some actually prescribe exercises to their patients in between treatments.

Qigong is different from Yoga primarily because it requires slower more gracious movements to harness your electromagnetic field. Some Qigong exercises build muscle or speed, but most are a pulsation of Qi through the body.  Qigong is the “sensation of energy” and is highly tangible.  A few advanced systems of yoga, like Kriya Yoga, have striking similarities to Qigong.  However, compared to most systems of Yoga, Qigong has a much greater emphasis on precise breathing techniques.  Qigong deals with smaller movements of the abdomen to circulate Qi and more precise movements of the hands, rooting into the earth and opening up pathways of energy. Yoga works with energy, but to a lesser degree and although we practice and love Yoga, Qigong does what Yoga cannot. We train many thousands of yoga teachers and they are always blown away by the tangibility of Qi experienced.

Within 10 minutes of Qi Breathing many feel electricity in their hands. “The Buzz” as we call it in the Qigong Family, is a reaction caused by increased levels of oxygen and ions, which I believe accelerates the vibration of our mitochondria.  Many describe the inner buzzing or vibrational feeling as a natural high and it has the obvious effect of stimulating endorphins.  Many people describe “Perma-Grin” where the gratitude is so overwhelming and the joy so potent that they can’t stop smiling for a short time.  One Qigong student taking Xanax bars from his doctor several times a day to stay functional reported after the Breath Empowerment that he was more relaxed then anytime in his life.  This man later used his God-given Breath and willpower to ween himself off the Xanax and back into his natural state.

Qigong is best in the Morning as a Practice to Extend Life and Beauty.   For days when time is short I recommend cleansing your body with oxygen and energy FIRST THING IN THE MORNING.  My practice is to wake up, brush my teeth and hair, drink some hot tea outside and do the 9-Breath Method five times absorbing/retaining large amounts of oxygen in my bloodstream.   Gentle power breathing awakens the cellular VIBRATION and stimulates metabolism.  As I wake up slowly for 10 minutes each morning my senses become heightened and I watch the birds in my garden.   This is a quick and powerful method, which we spend hours thoroughly teaching at the Qi Revolution conference.

Qigong uses Readily Available Foods as Medicine.  A big part of what we teach at our events is how to use “Specific Foods to REVERSE Specific Diseases”.
Many foods like kiwi, which have hidden properties for asthmatics, can genuinely be claimed to have helped hundreds of our Qigong students reverse chronic asthma.   Of course it is not one food that led to this outcome.  These people stopped eating a short list of nasty qi stealing foods and replaced them with healthier options all while practicing Qigong.  The truth is that food is key and our program entitled, “Conquering Any Disease” has food based protocols documented to work with hundreds of cancer success stories backing the effectiveness of natural food to reverse illness and maximize vitality.

During Qigong practice we feel a powerful pulsation of blood in our body. Often it takes people by surprise how warm they feel after making just a few hand movements. Qigong moves a lot of blood and generates a lot of energy without lots of movement or stress.  

Often people ask “What is a Qi blockage?” It is simply a small area where the blood cannot go, or an area where disease can occur.     For example, some people may have a knot in their stomach or bad digestion. Qigong usually improves this condition. Blood can work  itself through closed off capillaries when a person is relaxed and    increasing Qi in that area.  Wherever Qi goes, blood follows. Normal healthy people use about 60% of the circulatory system. When our Qi increases this percentage is also goes up. Blood flow to the brain and organs is improved, therefore our health is greatly benefited.  The electrical aspect of Qigong also plays a role.  

So how is this any different than jogging?  In Qigong the body is totally relaxed, yet the blood is mobilized to flow powerfully.  Because there is no stress response or cortisol release, which contracts blood vessels, the blood can enter areas that may have been blocked off for years. Microcirculation to the forehead is  increased and digestion is greatly improved.  Imagine the same blood circulation you get from jogging… while standing still completely relaxed.  No other exercise offers this level of circulation to organs & endocrine glands. Stiff shoulders beware… Qi and Blood coming through.

 Healthcare Practitioners REALLY need Qigong

 Healthcare practitioners can prevent themselves from getting drained by seeing lots of sick patients.  This is a fact for many therapists and nurses that I encounter. Each year we train hundreds of registered nurses and nearly all of them complain that they constantly feel drained.  Often massage therapists take on the aches and pains of their clients.  While this may sound superstitious I assure you the phenomena is real.  Often doctors who specialize in a certain aspect of medicine are exposed to a certain “Energy Information Signal” so frequently that they end up with the same problems they are surrounded by.  Why practicing in Groups is the KEY

 Healing occurs in Qigong when one raises their energy high enough to push through the blockages of the nervous and circulatory system.   Whatever Qi touches will be rejuvenated by it, however people are often blocked and thus need stronger energy to clear the pipes so Qi reach the problem areas.  Some schools teach that people need the help of a powerful master to send strong energy for that    initial boost.  After personally training with 7 high level Qigong masters I do not believe this to be true.  The most effective way to begin the healing process is to enter a large group energy field.   They knew it China when they repeatedly gathered 30,000 at a time and people were getting up out of wheel chairs.   I saw a retired nurse enter my seminar wheeling a walker.  On the 4th day she was walking laps around the massive ballroom without her walker.  In all honesty, the Qigong is very powerful, but it is the group energy that turns it into overdrive.  Every person has a biological magnetic field.  When a group of even 3 people practice together the results are at least double.  A larger field is created than any of us could generate on our own in the beg Qigong events.   Being in this high amplitude energy is the single fastest way to jumpstart ones internal energy.   This is the understatement of the century.


A Brief History Of The Word Qigong

Have you ever wondered why some people use the word Qigong, whilst others use Chi Kung?

Have you ever seen words like: Qui gong, Chi Gung and Chi Kong and wondered if they’re all talking about the same subject?

If you have, this post was written just for you.

And if you haven’t, well, you’ll still learn something of interest =)

Now then, back when I wrote my first book: Shaolin Chi Kung in 2008, you’ll notice that I favoured the Wade-Giles ‘Chi Kung‘ version instead of the Romanized: ‘Qigong‘.

But today I use Qigong pretty much all the time.


Well, to be blunt far more people search for Qigong online than they do for Chi Kung. And as I’m a professional Qigong teacher, i.e. I make my living from teaching Qigong then it makes sense for me to set up my ‘stall’ in front of the most traffic.

Sure, I could write Qigong/Chi Kung all the time, but that’d grow old real quick.

So are Qigong and Chi Kung the same?


Qigong is a recent term used for the Chinese energy arts. In the dim and distant past it would have been called Nei Gong.

Now hold on tight grasshopper, because what follows makes my head spin and I’ve been exposed to it for many years.

Let’s go, I promise to do my best to make this as simple and as clear as possible…

You see Nei Gong is only half of the story.

The other half is Wei Gong.

Wei Gong and Nei Gong are the two groups that the legion of Kung Fu force training arts are usually divided into. Where:

  • Wei Gong is used to refer to External Force Training arts. Wei Gong trains Jin, Gu and Bi or muscles, bones and flesh. It utilizes techniques such as stretching, hitting objects or using weights.
  • Nei Gong is used to refer to Internal Force Training arts. Nei Gong trains Jing, Qi and Shen or essence, energy and spirit. These arts utilise techniques like: Zhan Zhuang, meditation, Dynamic Qigong exercises.

I’m sure you can see that the type of Qigong I teach fits into the Internal Force Training, Nei Gong group.

Now if you factor in the different dialects, e.g. Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese Chinese (the dialect most used by Chinese in the West) and allow for human error you can quickly see why there are so many different ways of referring to the Chinese energy arts.


Whatever spelling you prefer to use when writing about your Qigong practice:

Qigong, Chi Kung, Nei Gong, Qui Gong, Chi Gong, Chi Kong or something else – it’s not something worth getting your knickers in a twist over.

What you want to be concerned about is whether what you practice brings you the results you want.

If it doesn’t, chances are you’re practicing Qigong form only. Like I said yesterday, there’s nothing evil about Qigong form, it’s just mostly a waste of your precious time, energy and money.


Here’s A Great Exercise For Neck Muscle Relief

I was so busy hanging out with Ollie this morning I lost track of time.

I tell you, the older that boy gets the more interesting he gets too!

He’s getting heavily into astronomy and his enthusiasm is infectious, so much so I’m way behind schedule. So what I’m going to do is this…

I’m going to share an email I received yesterday from one of my awesome clients Bob H. and my comments will follow.

Here goes:

Dear Marcus

Your work and commitment to Qigong education and training is outstanding.

I carry my Shaolin Chi Kung book with me everywhere. During my lunch break, I read one new practice from the book and then practice the exercise in my lunch break in the lunch room. I obtain an audience watching my practice, and then see a few people actually trying some of the exercises. I proved them with your Qigong email address for further information.

Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time sitting down behind the desk and working on projects. After about an hour I get aching and sore neck muscles. This is time to do an exercise. My favourite exercises for this is Rotating Winch and also Big Turn of the Cosmos.

Rotating Winch for neck muscle relief is the greets exercise everybody should be doing. I found the true secret is that the practitioner has to learn to actually relax their neck and shoulder muscles when they reach fig.12 (p.73) when opening the mouth. If they hold that position and relax their shoulder and neck muscles there is an incredible sensation when you feel the top part of your shoulders and neck turn to water as the tight muscles totally relax.

That part of my body just loosens up like jelly. The neck and shoulder ache disappears after 10 repetitions. I strongly recommend this exercise for all people.

You can practice Qigong exercises as exercises.

At the form level only.

And still gain worthwhile benefits: stretching, relaxing and pain relief for example.

All I’ll say is just realise there’s a huge difference between practicing Qigong exercises at the form level and practicing them as PERFECT Qigong.

But Bob’s been a client of mine for quite a while and knows this well.

Also, it’s worth repeating that this stuff only works if you work it.

3) Butterfly Dancing (BD) – If you want to be happy you need to ‘Open Your Heart’ and one of the best Qigong exercises for doing this is BD.

Significant, highly emotional events that were not handled effectively at the time can really make you ill later.

BD is a powerful Qigong exercise for overcoming illness caused by such events.

Quick Note: My experience as a Qigong healer has convinced me that the number one cause of most serious illness is emotional and as a result BD forms an important part of my healing kit.

2) Carrying The Moon (CTM) – I love to cleanse. Some people love to build. But there’s a common misconception in Qigong that you get more ‘powerful’ by adding energy.

The truth is, adding energy to a blocked system can cause more harm than good. And if you’re living in the 21st Century you can be pretty certain that your system is getting blocked up on a daily basis.

CTM practiced at a higher level known as ‘Cosmic Shower’ is the best cleansing Qigong exercise I have ever encountered since I first became aware of Qigong back in 1992.

Qigong – Why Practice It?

  1. Health & Vitalitychi kung literally is the  art of managing your vital energy.  Vital energy or chi/qi is what keeps you and me alive.  Chi kung means energy work and it works directly on your energy.  Chi kung is based firmly on the concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  In a nut shell your energy flows through meridians.  If these meridians are blocked illness results.  Dependent on the severity of the blockage.  If the blockage is enough to stop the flow of chi/qi/energy completely – death rapidly follows!  The first aim of chi kung is to remove these energy blockages and the great thing about chi kung is that unlike accupuncture, tui na, herbs and diet (the other main branches of TCM) you don’t need to know where these energy blockages are.  Practice high level chi kung and your chi/qi will naturally flow to these areas of blockage (low energy) and work on removing them.  Chi kung really is that clever!  With the clearing away of blockages health and vitality are the result.
  2. Longevitythe forte of chi kung is in two parts. The first is to remove blockages and promote health and vitality.  But chi kung practiced daily, correctly will also increase longevity.  How?  Well smooth chi flow through the meridians (energy channels) of the body = good health, then when the flow is strong you have vitality and when you have an abundance of energy/chi/qi you will live a long, healthy and happy life.  But keep in mind that chi kung is not some 30 day miracle cure!  No, to get these benefits of chi kung, it must be practiced correctly, every single day.
  3. Internal Forcethink of this as energy+ It’s what allows you to wake up in a morning feeling good to go.  Work hard all day, come home at the end of the day and still have plenty of get up and go left to enjoy your time with family or friends.  It can also be used by martial artist practitioners to make them more effective in combat.  It is very common for chi kung to be practiced by martial artists.  But the type of chi kung practiced is usually different as they have different needs.
  4. Mind Expansionchi kung is great for scholars and creatives. Imagine being able to tap into more of your natural talent.  Chi kung helps to clear the mind of useless clutter.  The practice of chi kung allows you to focus the mind.  Think of your mind as the sun and think of chi kung as a magnifying glass.  Put the two together and you have a great power!
  5. Spiritual Cultivationlet’s get one thing straight right from the start.  Chi kung is non religious. Practitioners of any religion, or those who don’t practice a religion can practice chi kung and gain its benefits.  By spiritual I mean that inner part of you that makes you uniquely you.  Chi kung helps you to cultivate that part of you.  We all have a spiritual side to us, and sadly it is often the most neglected part.  Personally I believe that is why illness like depression, anxiety and stress are so rampant in our society today.  We seem to place little or no value on Spirit.  Practice chi kung and whether you believe you are a spiritual being or not, you will protect yourself from depression, anxiety and increase your resistance to stress.

The Most Important Ingredient For Your Success With Qigong Is…

I‘m frequently asked this type of question:

“Which Qigong exercise should I practice?”

Well, let’s take a look at the 5 main of aims of Qigong and I’ll recommend 1 or 2 for each one:

  1. Health and vitality – Lifting The Sky (p.53), Nourishing Kidneys (p.81)
  2. Longevity – Carry The Moon (p.77)
  3. Internal force – Push Mountains (p.103)
  4. Mental Clarity – Nourishing Kidneys (p.81)
  5. Spiritual cultivation – Separating Water (p.107), Shoot Arrows (p.57)

Note: the number after the exercise relates to the page number in my Shaolin Chi Kung book.

However, there is something I believe to be far more important than which Qigong exercise is known to be most cost effective for producing a desired result.

And it’s this:


Let me explain…

Qigong is an art that has to be practiced regularly for months before you really start to gain it’s heavy duty benefits.

Sure, if you practice Qigong the way I teach it, you’ll quickly experience many worthwhile benefits straight away.

Such as:

  • Feeling physically relaxed.
  • Inner peace.
  • Being calm and focused at the same time.

And so on.

But these pleasant experiences don’t usually hang around for long before the stresses and strains of your life wash them away.

You see, despite what anyone else might tell you, it takes repetition and persistance to plant the foundations of a Qigong practice that will give you a bountiful harvest of delicious benefits.

And from 10 years of teaching Qigong students I’ve noticed that those who enjoy their practice succeed quicker and get much better results from their practice than those who don’t.


Two reasons.

One I’ve just covered:

When you enjoy something you’re more likely to do it. And Qigong isn’t something you can just read about and gain the benefits of.

You have to practice it.

The second reason is just as important.

And if you’ve been a Qigong Daily reader for any period of time you’ll have heard me say it before.

But here goes for those who’ve only recently joined the party…

It’s the skills of Qigong that give you the benefits of Qigong,
not which Qigong exercises or forms you practice.
And Qigong skills are developed through correct daily practice and correct daily practice is most quickly and easily developed by doing Qigong exercises you enjoy.

So now do you see why I say:

“The most important ingredient for your success with Qigong is Enjoyment”
Let me give you a quick example:
